Hugh Miller was a well-known British stage and film actor. He played a crucial role in establishing the London Film Society in 1925, but left shortly after to pursue opportunities in the United States. On Broadway, he found success in the role of Mr. Jingle in the play “Pickwick” in 1927, and in Hollywood, he appeared in the Gloria Swanson film “The Love of Sunya” the same year. Miller served as a dialogue coach for the film “Lawrence of Arabia” and mentored actor Peter O’Toole early in his career. O’Toole credited Miller for recommending him to director David Lean. Miller also appeared as a bit player in several of Lean’s films and served as dialogue coach for “Doctor Zhivago,” which was his final screen appearance before his death in 1976.
