Katey Sagal is an American actress, singer, and songwriter best known for her roles as the sarcastic, assertive matriarch Peg Bundy on the long-running Fox sitcom Married…with Children and as Gemma Teller Morrow, the fierce and protective matriarch on the FX crime drama Sons of Anarchy.
Katey Louise Sagal was born on January 19, 1954 in Los Angeles, California. From an early age, she was immersed in the world of entertainment—her father was director Boris Sagal and her mother was a singer. She studied acting and singing as a youth and began her career as a backup singer and songwriter. Her first major acting role came in 1985 when she was cast in Married…with Children, starring as the iconic Peg Bundy for 11 seasons through 1997 and cementing her name in sitcom history.
After the end of Married…with Children, Katey landed roles on a number of other hit shows like Futurama, Lost, Glee, and Shameless. In 2008, she switched gears with the gritty biker drama Sons of Anarchy as the ferocious Gemma Teller Morrow. Her layered and intense performance earned her a Golden Globe award in 2011. She concluded her run on the show after seven acclaimed seasons in 2014.
