Nichelle Nichols is an American actress, singer, and astronaut recruiter. She is best known for her role as Nyota Uhura in the original “Star Trek” television series (1966-1969), and in several “Star Trek” feature films. Nichols’ portrayal of Uhura was groundbreaking, as she was one of the first African American women to have a lead role on American television. After her time on “Star Trek”, she went on to have a successful career in television and film, and has been recognized for her contributions to the entertainment industry with several awards and honors. In addition to her acting career, Nichols is also known for her work as an astronaut recruiter for NASA, where she helped to recruit women and people of color for the space program.
