Ruby Dee was an American actress, playwright, screenwriter, and civil rights activist. She had a long and distinguished career in the entertainment industry, appearing in numerous films, television shows, and stage productions. Dee was best known for her roles in the films “A Raisin in the Sun” and “American Gangster”, and for her stage work in productions of “The Jackie Robinson Story” and “A Hand is on the Gate”. She was also a dedicated civil rights activist, working with her husband, the actor Ossie Davis, to advance the cause of equality and justice. Dee received many awards and honors throughout her career, including an Oscar nomination and a Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award.
